

Part 1: Understand Integrated Decision

1.1 Fast decision-making based on experience
● Module 3 covers the Evaluate competency: weighing multiple options, considering trade-offs, and justifying a decision when many stakeholders are involved and information keeps changing.
● Under time pressure, experienced people typically recognize a situation as familiar and mentally simulate whether the first response would work rather than comparing every option in full (Klein 1998).
● Application: an experienced engineer's first response is usually right, but should still be checked when the situation is complex or involves multiple stakeholders.

1.2 Why it's hard to change an initial decision
● "Escalation of commitment": Once people make a decision, they may stick with it because they want to prove their original choice was right, even when the situation shows it is no longer suitable (Staw 1976).
● Application: when bad news arrives mid-shift, the natural reflex is to try to "save" the original plan rather than reconsider it. Recognizing this tendency is the first step to avoiding it.

1.3. Trading off multiple objectives
● Real decisions often involve conflicting goals, so you cannot always achieve everything at the same time. You need to understand what you gain and what you give up with each choice (Keeney and Raiffa 1976).
● Application: A faster option may increase safety risk, while a safer option may cause delays. The key is to understand and clearly explain the trade off before making a decision.

1.4 Accountability improves decision quality
● When people know they will need to explain their decision to others, they tend to think more carefully and consider different perspectives (Lerner and Tetlock 1999).
● Application: The “Justify” step encourages engineers to think carefully from the beginning because they know they will need to explain why they made that choice.
